Phillip Karp was born in New York City and is currently based in Miami, Florida. Karp’s approach to image making is best described by its ever-changing freedom to discover meaning through a visual language. His personal praxis allows the reach towards theoretical possibilities through new methods and experiences. Karp’s work questions how we see and how we communicate seeing. Through this, he encourages the viewer to reflect on the act of looking itself, emphasizing observation as a complex, continuous process.
His first solo presentation, the way out is through, was on view in the window of a Walgreens on Miami Beach. Karp has exhibited in various exhibitions, including at the Frost Art Museum, Daniel Marban Gallery, and Name Publications. He has completed several residencies, including Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna, Florida and Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. Karp was an artist in residence at Oolite Arts in Miami, Florida from 2019–2021. His work was recently featured in New South, Volume II: Double Vision, published by Atlanta Center for Photography.
